For the last four years, I've been immersed in studying the holistic medical sciences of naturopathy, Ayurveda, and Chinese medicine.*
While learning the languages, histories, and philosophical foundations for each of these systems of medicine, their traditions of astrology have provided me surprising clarity about their differing, but also shared, understandings of humanity, health, and our place in natural existence.
Because studying these traditions of astrology became so clarifying, I chose to dive deeper into studying Western (Hellenistic), Indian (Vedic), and Chinese astrology, learning their intricacies of symbolism anchored in natural phenomena and how they relate to human experience.
Another thread woven throughout my studies, in parallel with learning these astrological systems, has been how much I value empathy.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) was my initial introduction to the term and concept of empathy, and NVC's principles have continued to be a source of inspiration to me. I have found my appreciation of empathy especially crucial while learning how to contribute to human health, making sure to center my approach in caring about the felt experience and fundamental needs of human beings.
But I have also continued to deepen my understanding about empathy through learning about interpersonal neurobiology and childhood development, pondering challenges of our current state of humanity and our shared world, and navigating personal life experiences (including adopting a puppy!).
Throughout my medical studies and along my personal path, there is one single factor that I have found makes the difference between helpful and harmful experiences: empathy.
The topic of empathy is complex and profoundly relevant for the challenges we face: from our individual experiences, to our relationships with one another, to our collective human experience, and to the web of life of our planet.
Empathy is a natural human capacity worth continuous nurturing, and empathy as a shared human need is something worth tending to in ourselves and those we interact with each day. I believe that whatever we do, if we do it with respect for life and with empathy, it is infinitely more effective at increasing wellbeing.
